The Fond du Lac girls basketball team defended its home court Friday night, winning its tournament with a big 53-45 nonconference victory over Sun Prairie.

The difference was in the second quarter, where the Cardinals (7-2) outscored Sun Prairie 11-2 to take an 11-point lead into halftime and they held on from there.

Junior Brianna Wagner scored 15 points for a second-straight night to give her 30 for the two-day tournament, while senior Taylor Penning added 10 Friday to finish with 22 overall.

Fondy also was sharp from the free-throw line, making 16-of-22 attempts. Sun Prairie (5-2) got a game-high 21 points from senior McKayla Yentz.

The Cardinals’ next game is Jan. 4 at Neenah.

Oakfield 52, Gillett 45

Madelyn Ryan kept Oakfield in the game in the first half, and Alyza Streeter and the Oaks’ free-throw shooting ensured they would win the consolation game of the North Fond du Lac tournament.

Ryan had 10 of her 14 points in the first half and Streeter, who got into early foul trouble, scored all 14 of her points in the second half.

“They had a big run at the end of the first half,” said Oakfield coach Dave Benkoske. “We came out and had another run in that third quarter and held on in the fourth quarter.”

Oakfield was 11-of-13 from the charity stripe in the fourth.

Mayville 45, Ripon 44

Mayville held off a fourth-quarter charge by Ripon to earn its second win of the season, winning the consolation game of the Waupun tournament. The Cardinals (2-5) used free throws to down the stretch to take a four point lead, and the Tigers (1-7) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Senior Kate Bemis had a game-high 20 points for Mayville, making three of her five 3s in the third quarter. She also had five rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Sophomore Shannon McNeil had 17 points for Ripon.
