Snow Canyon High is turning to a familiar face to reinvigorate its struggling football program. Assistant Principal and AD Conley Gali announced on Monday the Warriors have hired Marcus Matua as their new head coach.
He replaces Jay Graft, who stepped down following the 2012 season after compiling a 33-36 record in two stints at the helm. Matua will no doubt see many challenges in restoring Snow Canyon’s program to a highly competitive state and snap its disappointing six-year playoff drought.
For those on the Warriors campus, Matua’s presence is a familiar one.
Aside from being an assistant football coach for Snow Canyon in the past, Matua is also a counselor, assistant girls basketball coach, and advisor/coach for the Warriors rugby team. Thus, with a solid track record to go off of, Gali felt more than comfortable with the new hire.
“He (Matua) was one of 14 candidates, and we felt he was our best choice for Snow Canyon High School,” Gali said.
