Tonight’s Friday Night Fever “Big Game” is the Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division showdown at Brunswick’s Judy Kirsch Stadium between the visiting Mentor Cardinals and the host Brunswick Blue Devils.
The divisional opener pits arguably its 2012 headliners against one another. The Cardinals and Blue Devils enter the contest with identical 4-1 records and have their sights set not only on a division championship, but also a deep playoff run.
Mentor received votes in this week’s Associated Press Division I state media poll, but both teams have comparable, playoff-caliber talent.
According to the latest Ohio Athletic Association computer rankings, the Cardinals are currently ranked seventh in Region 1 while Brunswick is currently slated seventh in Region 2. The top eight seeds in each region at the conclusion of Week 10 qualify for the playoffs.
Mentor’s lone defeat came in a Week 3 48-21 road loss to St. Ignatius – which is ranked atop this week’s AP Division I state poll – while Brunswick’s only blemish came in a Week 3 35-7 loss to Austintown Fitch, which is ranked fifth in the same AP media poll.
The Cardinals have outscored their first five opponents by a combined score of 189-102. Senior quarterback Mitch Trubisky has completed 81-of-137 passes while throwing for 1,187 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Blue Devils have outscored their first five opponents by a combined score of 143-81. Senior Dan Yohman has completed 37-of-60 passes for 549 yards and six touchdowns. The dual-threat signal caller has also rushed for 375 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries. Senior tailback Nick Roberts, the team’s leading rusher, has run for 522 yards and five scores on 93 carries.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
