West High was without some of its big guns Saturday at the West High Rick Doran Classic, but it really didn’t matter because the Women of Troy bashed 10 hits en route to an 8-2 victory over Class 4A No. 13 Charles City in the first of two games at Pearl Field.
Class 5A eighth-ranked West won its second game 2-1 in eight innings over 4A No. 8 North Scott.
Freshman Madi Miller, eighth-grader Taylor Libby and junior Morgan Ryan combined to drive in five runs to lead the Women of Troy.
West scored three in the first on two hit batsmen, an error and Miller’s two-out, two-run double over the leftfielder’s head.
Miller said the only thing she was thinking was that she can hit the ball.
“Confidence I guess,” she said.
Miller didn’t see the ball sail over the leftfielder’s head, but when the coach pointed toward second she got the idea of what happened.
A third run scored on a passed ball.
In the third inning, senior Brianna Sturtz tripled to the right-centerfield gap, and Libby lined a double over the leftfielder to score her. West had another runner thrown out at the plate in the inning.
“If you were crowding the plate, (Comet pitcher Kate Kloberdanz) was going to pitch you outside or throw you a screw or a curve to get you to chase it,” Libby said. “If you were off the plate, she’d throw inside and try to jam you.
“I had two strikes, so I just wanted to put the bat on the ball and try to score a run.”
Mackenzie Haight got the victory giving up only four hits, none for extra bases. But she had an error and a couple wild pitches that led to Charles City’s two-run sixth.
Miller was playing third in the absence of Shelly Stumpff and made a couple heads-up plays to squelch possible rallies. Charles City had runners on first and second with no outs in the second. Miller was playing in when Abby Staudt grounded to her. Miller had to make a split-second decision, and she outraced the runner at second to the third-base bag for the out.
“I just had to make the out,” she said.
In the third inning, she cut down another lead runner, this time at second on a peg across the diamond.
That narrowed the lead to 4-2, but West struck back for four in the seventh.
“I had confidence in my team,” Miller said after the lead shrunk.
A walk, single by Libby, and three errors gave the Women of Troy two runs. Miller singled in one run, and Morgan’s ground out scored another.
West has two games Tuesday at Waterloo East.
