Lauren Smith scored the game’s only goal on a deflection in front of the net, and host West M rode its defense to a 1-0 win against visiting Philo to clinch the Muskingum Valley League title Thursday.

Smith’s goal, which came 12 minutes into the second half, came off pass from Cameron Smith. It was deflected by two players off Philo keeper Mallary Trout, and when the ball squirted free, Lauren Smith converted from close range.

Layne Archer had a chance to tie the match late with a shot to the upper right corner, but Tornadoes keeper Chelcey Tusing dived and deflected the ball away.

West, which lost the first meeting against the Electrics 3-2, held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Tusing had six saves and Trout seven. The Tornadoes also were aided by a strong showing from defenders Linsey Lynch, Olivia Bobb and Kaylee Barnhart.

West will play Rosecrans in a Division III sectional match at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
