West's depth key to win

WISCONSIN RAPIDS

The Wausau West girls swimming team used its depth to dominate a Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet against Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.

The Warriors had six individual winners and claimed two of the three relays to cruise past the Raiders 116-54.

And it wasn’t just the individual wins that helped the Warriors’ cause. In every race, West had scoring swimmers in the top three place-winners to rack up plenty of points.

“I think we are doing a good job focusing on the little things in practice and it’s starting to carry over in our meets,” said senior Caity Coleman, who won the 100 freestyle and was on part of two winning relay teams. “I think we all swam with open minds and swam hard tonight.”

Junior Drew Detert was on a pair of winning relay teams and also won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 27.13 seconds and the 100 butterfly (1:12.67).

Danielle Kringbaum (200 freestyle), Caroline McDonald (200 IM) and Hannah Hinds (400 freestyle), also won individual evens for the Warriors.

“I like how our team is coming together,” Coleman said. “Everyone is working together and working hard to make each other better.”

The Raiders had individual winners in Megan Siekert in the 50 freestyle (31.43) and Rachel Sneen in the 100 backstroke (1:18.08).

Those two joined forces with Elli Esselman and Brianna Lindvig to win the 200 relay.

“We knew we were facing a powerful team, but the girls swam hard, and we set a lot of PRs,” Rapids coach Keri Siekert said. “The girls are putting a lot of what we’re doing in practice into our meets now and that’s a big step forward.”
