Heather Zuleger is moving on

Unfortunately, her Oshkosh West teammates aren’t.

The Wildcats girls golf team finished in a tie for third at a WIAA Division 1 Sectional at Butte Des Morts Country Club on Monday, finishing just short of qualifying for the state meet.

However, Zuleger will be moving on state. She fired a 81 on her way to grabbing the first individual qualifying spot into the WIAA Division 1 State Golf Meet next Monday.

Zuleger once again used a solid back nine to jump up the leaderboard, firing a 39 on that side. She tied with Homestead’s Rachel Morris but won on the first playoff hole with a par to become the sectional championship

“That is the motto, its almost like a broken record,” West coach Nicole Peterson said of Zuleger’s back nine. “You could see that when she made the turn. I just told her to hang in there, your totally fine and keep playing.”

“To be sectional champ, that’s pretty cool accomplishment.”

Tara Daly also fired a solid 90, finishing in 12th place and just four shots short of the final individual qualifying spot for the Wildcats. She probably could’ve made it but a tough 51 on the front put her in a hole.

However, no other Wildcat golfer could shoot in the 90s and Oshkosh West lost touch with the two qualifying teams at the top — sectional-champ Arrowhead and Homestead — finishing over 40 shots back from qualifying, posting a 387 to tie with Appleton North.

“I think that when we talked as a team, we never shot that number for what we needed to win,” Peterson said. “We went in there to just go out, have fun and see what happens.”

Oshkosh North’s Michelle Kim shot a 91 to finish in a tie for 13th place, five shots shy of the last individual qualifying spot, while Amy Smits shot a 97 for the Spartans.

For West, it put an end to a great season for the Wildcats team.

“I never thought we’d finish conference undefeated, win the confernce and win our regional,” Peterson said. “I didnt know what to expect. We played that underdog and everybody likes that. We also did this back to back and those are some cool things.”
