For the Sheboygan South and Sheboygan Falls girls soccer teams, today is a chance for redemption.
The Redwings and Falcons each face teams they lost to in the regular season in sectional finals. South lost to De Pere 1-0 on April 19 while Falls fell to Appleton Xavier 1-0 on May 12.
Meanwhile in Division 3, Oostburg hopes history will repeat itself. The Flying Dutchmen face Saint Mary’s Springs, a team they beat 4-1 on April 14.
South, the No. 4-seed, upset top-seeded Kimberly on the road Thursday 2-1.
The Redwings are led by a dynamic duo of sophomores, Rachel Van Sluys and Mimi Pulido. Van Sluys has 26 goals this season while Pulido has 25, and both scored against Kimberly.
But neither could find the back of the net in South’s early season meeting with De Pere. That’ll have to change today if South hopes to make it’s first trip to State in school history.
Despite Falls losing to Xavier earlier this year, the Falcons should still be confident. The teams’ meeting was during the Sheboygan North Raider Invite and featured shorter halves.
Neither the Falcons nor the Hawks have allowed a goal this postseason. Falls has outscored its opponents 17-0 while Xavier has topped its three foes 18-0.
While Oostburg defeated Springs earlier this season, the Flying Dutchmen do not get the luxury of playing the Ledgers at a neutral site. Because Springs was scheduled to host the sectional final, it will get to play at home with a trip to State on the line.
The Flying Dutchmen are the hottest team in the area, having won 11 straight, outscoring their opponents 35-6 over that span.
