Will Grier nearly passed for a half mile Friday while leading Davidson (N.C.) Day to a 104-80 playoff defeat of Harrells (N.C.) Christian.
Grier, a junior, threw for a national record of 837 yards in the win and broke his own state record for most touchdown passes with 10 in a state independent schools Division II semifinal.
The old national record for single-game passing yardage was 764 by David Koral of Pacific Palisades (Los Angeles) in 2000.
After the game, Grier’s father, Davidson Day coach Chad Grier, said his phone blew up with messages, many of them asking what the rebound and assist stats were.
“We’re still trying to make sense of it,” Chad Grier said. “Right now, we’re just so focused on winning games. I got an email from Oregon’s offensive coordinator (Mark Helfrich), who asked if we were playing basketball. That’s pretty funny coming from him.”
As good as Grier and his receivers were, another reason the score was so high was the Patriots had to match the effort of Harrells Christian running back Russell Washington, who ran for 699 yrds and seven touchdowns.
“Russell Washington is a heck of a running back,” Grier said. “There were plenty of times we put hats on him and he kept going. He was just that good. The irony was, even though we gave up 80 points, our defense won it for us by getting two turnovers late.”
For their efforts, Grier and Washington lead the American Family Insurance All-USA Performances of the Week. The rest of the top performances:
