If you have to go a long way, it always helps to come back with something nice.
The Yorktown wrestling team won the Fox High School “Ron Sauer” Invitational in Arnold, Mo., Saturday. After coming out of pool play with a 2-1 record, the Tigers rolled through Belleville East (Ill.), Edwardsville (Ill.), Northwest (Mo.) and finally knocked off Wentzville Holt 35-27 in the finals.
Holt handed Yorktown, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, its loss in pool play, 32-30. The tournament featured strong teams from several states, and Tigers coach Trent McCormick said it afforded his team a special opportunity.
“It’s a great experience; it builds a lot of team chemistry,” McCormick said. “We get to measure ourselves against quality opponents from other states.
Three Tigers went undefeated in the seven matches: Schuyler Phillips at 120 pounds, Chandler Carroll at 145 and Rhett Hiestand at 160.
* Bradley leads Southside: Defending state champion Isaiah Bradley of Southside won by two pins and a major decision at 152 pounds as the Rebels finished second in their invitational.
Bradley was named the most valuable wrestler of the event.
East Noble won the team event with 287.5 points, while Southside was second with 198.5.
Southside’s Jake Reed went 3-0 at 170 pounds with all pins and Evan Dick went 3-0 at 182 with two pins and a decision.
* Bears strong in Hagerstown: Monroe Central went 4-1 in the Hagerstown Invitational with four wrestlers going 5-0. They were Alex Ordonez at 132, Garett Calhoun at 145, Davey Tinsman at 182 and Jacob Peckham at heavyweight.
* Delta wins three: Delta came out of the South Adams Invitational with three wins and two losses in the round-robin dual meet. Adam Gordon, Brock House and Scottie Evans all went 5-0.

defeated: Daleville went 1-4 at the Lincoln Six-Way Invitational, with the lone win against Indiana School for the Deaf. Three Bronco wrestlers, Jonathan Brown, Cody Duke and Connor Clark, went 5-0, with Brown getting four pins and being named the tournament’s most valuable wrestler.
* Pope leads Vikings: Blue River finished 1-4 at Lincoln. Noah Pope had a 5-0 record at 160 pounds for Blue River. Two went 4-1: Emeline Scott at 106 and Lucas Vaugn heavyweight.
