Whether it’s the voice over the public address system, the guy calling the plays or the youngster taking the snaps, there is a Ziarno in green and gold.

Three generations of Ziarnos currently find themselves affiliated with Melbourne Central Catholic: Jim Ziarno Sr. as the P.A. announcer and junior varsity coach; his son, Jimmy, the offensive coordinator for the varsity; and sophomore Brandon Ziarno, the first-year varsity starter at quarterback.

Jimmy, a 1988 graduate, played for the Hustlers and has coached for the school for 17 years. His dad began coaching the JV in ’88. Last year, Jim Sr. coached the team quarterbacked by grandson Brandon to an undefeated eight-game season. The youngest Ziarno representative threw 25 touchdown passes.

“They were both looking forward to it for a long time,” Jimmy said. “They’re very close, and it’s a very special and unique bond.”

Jimmy, who was the coordinator for that team while also working with the varsity, now will have his son leading the big guys.

“It’s very special after practice, the drive home, and after games, but during games and during practice, he’s just one of my quarterbacks,” the coach said. “He knows I’m probably not the easiest guy to get along with, but he handles it well.”

Jim Sr. hasn’t missed a varsity or junior varsity game in 28 years — 475 in a row — and he appreciates having family around him.

“On a personal basis, it brings together so many things: a love for athletics and the educational aspect of the school, but also who and what we stand for,” he said. “We have an atmosphere that allows that and encourages that. It’s a great environment for us.”
