Johnson City’s Reggie Williams was one of 10 Section 4 wrestlers on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Eastern States Classic wrestling tournament at Sullivan County CC in Lake Sheldrake.
The tournament, which features 118 teams and is widely regarded as the most prestigious regular-season tournament in New York, resumes at 9:15 a.m. Saturday with the finals beginning at 4:15 p.m.
Williams, the top seed in the 195-pound weight class, had a first-round bye before escaping with a 12-11 decision over Sherburne-Earlville’s Garrett Duvall in the round of 16.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Williams’ teammate, Zach Colgan (152 pounds), Greene’s Mike Beckwith (160) and Christian Dietrich (170), Norwich’s Tristan Rifanburg (132) and Frank Garcia (145), Marathon’s Dillon Hurlbert (220), Lansing’s William Koll (126) and Connor Lapresi (138) and Corning’s Jimmy Overhiser (106).
Rifanburg, Koll, and Overhiser are all seeded second in their respective weight classes.
The last Section 4 wrestler to win an individual title at the Eastern States Classic was Tioga’s Derak Heyman in 2001. Heyman, now a wrestler at Binghamton University, won the 140 title that year.
* Defending champion Vestal sent 10 wrestlers into the semifinals en route to the team lead at the Mike Watson Memorial at Watkins Glen.
The Golden Bears have 129 points with Maine-Endwell second with 83 points. Among Vestal’s 10 semifinalists were unbeaten wrestlers Alex Francik (160) and James Benjamin (182).
