2013 All-Area Girls Track Athlete of the Year: Emily Edwards of Fort Myers

In her first year at Fort Myers as a sophomore Emily Edwards wasn’t running like her usual self. Workouts left her feeling empty and her times reflected that. At last season’s end she went to see her doctor to check if there was a problem. There was, she was diagnosed with an iron deficiency.

“Once I found out that there was something wrong it was kind of a relief,” Edwards said. “It brought new hope that I could train hard and hopefully a difference would be made.”

Edwards has added more red meat to her diet and iron supplement pills since the diagnosis and the difference is very clear. She qualified for one event, the 4×800-meter relay, at the 2012 Class 3A state finals. This season she qualified in the 1600-meter run and 800-meter run.

She won the Class 3A 1600-meter state title (5:00.60), leading wire-to-wire battling heavy winds and showers. She placed sixth in the 800-meter run at the state finals.

Edwards is also the fastest 1600-meter runner in the state, finishing in 4:53.91 at the LCAC Championships on March 14. That time ranks her 35th in the nation.
