C: Barry Buchowski, St. Augustine — The Tulane-bound senior hit .418 with an area-best six home runs and 29 RBIs to lead the Hermits’ offense. A first-team Cape-Atlantic League selection, he also led the Prep with a .548 on-base percentage and was chosen for the Carpenter Cup roster.
C: Ethan Francis, Schalick — The junior had a breakout year, especially with the bat, posting an area-best .500 batting average with 26 RBIs and three home runs, both second-best locally. Francis was a Tri-County Classic first-team and Carpenter Cup selection.
IF: Christian Adorno, St. Augustine — Arguably the area’s top defender, this Wilmington-bound senior shortstop provided plenty of ooh’s and aah’s this season. The CAL American first team and Carpenter Cup choice had a nice year at the plate as well with 34 hits and a .395 average. Adorno stole a whopping 36 bases too.
IF: Nick Freijomil, Delsea — This senior was the Crusaders’ team leader all season, posting a .366 batting average with 17 RBIs and a team-best 20 runs. Freijomil also was the staff ace, going 6-1 with a 1.87 ERA and 65 strikeouts. The LIU-Brooklyn-bound right-hander was a Tri-County Royal first-team and Carpenter Cup pick.
IF: Johnny Malatesta, Vineland — The junior enjoyed a breakout season behind a .457 batting average and team-leading 37 hits and 24 RBIs. Malatesta also proved capable on the mound, posting a 4-4 record with a 2.48 ERA and 58 strikeouts. The right-hander was first-team CAL American selection as an infielder.
IF: Marco Rios, Buena — Possibly the area’s top shortstop as just a sophomore, Rios definitely took the next step in his progression this season. The first-team CAL National selection was second on the Chiefs with 35 runs and third on the team with 29 hits. As a pitcher, Rios went 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA.
OF: Robert Bunton, Buena — The senior was an all-around offensive force this season, leading the Chiefs with 36 runs and 35 hits batting out of the leadoff spot. Bunton hit a solid .372 and stole 16 bases while earning first-team CAL National honors and a spot on the Carpenter Cup team.
OF: Mike Elfreth, St. Augustine — The senior doesn’t look like your prototypical cleanup hitter, but the numbers tell the true story. Elfreth led the Hermits with a .432 batting average and area-best 38 hits. The first-team CAL American and Carpenter Cup pick was second on the Prep with 24 RBIs.
OF: Gabe Rosado, Millville — The junior quietly had a solid season with a .438 average and 32 hits, both second-best on the Bolts behind Kyle Cox. The first-team CAL selection knocked in 15 runs and posted a 3.11 ERA on the mound in four starts for Millville.
Util: Kyle Cox, Millville — The junior really turned it on throughout the season and finished with team-highs in batting average (.439), hits (36) and RBIs (17). Cox also showed potential as a pitcher, going 2-0 with 18 strikeouts in 201⁄3 innings of relief while earning first-team CAL American honors and a spot on the Carpenter Cup roster.
Util: Chris Repice, Sacred Heart — The senior hit .480 with 36 hits — 18 for extra bases, including three home runs. Repice also scored 19 runs and stole 10 bases to help lead the Lions’ offense.
P: Bryan Dobzanski, Delsea — The junior right-hander posted a 0.29 ERA and struck out 36 batters in just 241⁄3 innings of work after returning from a shoulder injury in late April. Dobzanski hit .333 with 14 RBIs and a team-high 11 steals in a designated hitter role. He was a first-team Tri-County Royal and Carpenter Cup team selection.
P: Don Money, Vineland — The Daily Journal Baseball Player of the Year.
P: Chris Oakley, St. Augustine — The University of North Carolina-bound senior went 9-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 52 innings of work. The hard-throwing right-hander held the opposition to a stingy .188 batting average while earning CAL American first-team honors and a Carpenter Cup roster invitation.
P: Zach Warren, St. Augustine — Warren, a Vineland resident, stormed onto the scene this year to lead the area in strikeouts with 68. The junior left-hander went 6-1 with a 1.26 ERA in 50 innings of work and held opposing batters to a .151 average, tops on the Prep’s staff.
