Southwood coach Steve McDowell was named Coach of the Year and point guard Jessy Ellis, Player of the Year, on The Times All-City girls basketball team released on Saturday evening. See the full team below:

Steve McDowell, Southwood, Coach of the Year

This veteran coach won his 12th state title overall and shows no signs of wanting to give other schools a chance to win 5A’s most coveted prize. His 2012-13 senior-laden club went 33-1 on the season leaving a lot of beat-downs in their wake. That included a dominating 62-34 win over Natchitoches Central in the state title game.

Jessy Ellis, Southwood, Player of the Year

Named the 5A title game MVP after leading her team to a win over NCHS, the 5-foot-1 Ellis has continued to rack up postseason honors. State 5A MVP, All-Star game MVP, etc… The diminutive senior speedster continues to garner recruiting interest after averaging 18.1 ppg and 7.4 assists per game.

Kourtney Pennywell, Southwood, 5-10, Sr.

The Northwestern State signee was solid in the paint for the Lady Cowboys averaging 15.8 points, 6.8 rebounds.

Khadijah West, Huntington, 6-2, Sr.

Now an Arkansas commit, West led the Lady Raiders into the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs. She averaged 18.7 points, 11 boards and 2 blocks per game.

Dennisha Chambers, Plain Dealing, 5-4, Sr.

More dynamite in a small package. The 2012 Class A Player of the Year, couldn’t get her team past the state’s second round but averaged an amazing 38.0 points per game.

Diamond Willis, Sr., Byrd, 6-0, Sr.

One of the most underrated guards in the state, Willis was an unselfish star for Lady Jackets’ coach Toni Martinez. She put up 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists per game in leading Byrd to the state playoffs.
