No one can accuse Rosholt and Amherst of easing into the nonconference portion of their 2013 schedules when the two programs collide in a nonconference matchup at 7 p.m. today at Amherst High School.
Fresh off capturing the WIAA Division 5 state championship — the first in school history — with a 19-7 win over Lancaster, the Falcons will count on All-Central Wisconsin Conference-8 returners Garth Groshek, Colton Boelte, Jamie Docka, Connor Zblewski and Tyler Biadasz to continue the run of success. Gone are 15 seniors, so Amherst will need to replace all-state quarterback Chris Zblewski, along with much of the receiving corps and secondary.
First-year coach Adam Spindler takes over a Hornets program that reached Level 3 of the WIAA Division 6 playoffs for the first time in school history with wins over Tigerton/Marion and Pacelli, before falling to Edgar 43-0. Rosholt returns just about everyone on both sides of the ball, especially a defense that limited teams to just 13.6 points per game last season. The Central Wisconsin Conference-10 co-champions need to replace quarterback Alex Cole and running back Owen Neff, who gained 1,655 yards and scored 16 touchdowns.
The other local matchups include: D.C. Everest at SPASH; Pacelli at St. Mary Central; Iola-Scandinavia at Wild Rose; Fall River at Almond-Bancroft; Weston at Tri-County.
