After leading the Legacy Volleyball Club to the 16 Open Division AAU national championship this summer, junior libero Jenna Lerg turns her attention to taking Mercy (Farmington Hills, Mich.) beyond where it left off last season – the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
While Lerg’s aim is focused, it’s not without fun. As concentrated as she is the second she steps onto the court, she’s relaxed and absorbing the experience off of it. We went one-on-one to find out how the Michigan commit approaches her game day routine.
How the morning starts…
Lerg: One person on the team is designated to buy bagels, and we gather in the cafeteria at school to eat them.
During the bus ride to the game…
Lerg: We listen to Hannah Montana or “High School Musical”.
Pump-up song…
Lerg: “Not Afraid” by Eminem. I love Eminem. The words in the song are pretty cool.
Warm-up ritual…
Lerg: Right before the game we go to a place where no one can see us and do what’s called “Bridgette’s Aerobics”, which was started by a former player. We dance like crazy – we do the Cotton-Eyed Joe and other dances.
Go-to game shoes…
Lerg: I play in Mizuno Wave Lightning RX shoes. I’ve been wearing them for about a year and a half. They’re really comfortable and fitted to my foot. I can play how I want to play, and they don’t restrict me from getting to any balls.
Most surprising item always in her game day bag…
Lerg: Lollipops
