Catching up with Herriman (Utah) cross country star and Class 4A state champ Lucy Biles, she shares what helps get her race ready – from fueling, her ultimate pump-up jam and her go-to spikes.
How do you battle nerves before a big meet?
Biles: I listen to my pre-race playlist and talk to my coaches to get advice on what I need to do to perform well.
Tell us how you fuel on race day.
Biles: I have a healthy breakfast of oatmeal, a smoothie and an egg. During the day, I snack on fruits. For lunch, I usually have a Subway sandwich; 15 minutes before my race, I eat a Snickers bar. My power foods for recovery consist of protein and carbohydrates, like a protein shake.
What is always in your bag on race day?
Biles: I always have Icy Hot and my pillow pet. One of my coaches told me to have a “strong word” and used the example of an elephant. That’s the kind of animal my pillow is so that’s why I always have it with me.
What’s your ultimate pump-up song?
Biles: “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic. I like the tempo. I get it stuck in my head, and it helps my pace during the race.
What’s your racing spike?
Biles: I’ve mostly used the Brooks Mach 15. They really standout. My mom says she likes them because when I’m racing, she can tell which Herriman girl I am – all of us have blonde ponytails.
