JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) – Arkansas State head football coach Bryan Harsin has announced that Trent Waters out of Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tenn., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Red Wolves.
Waters joins A-State’s 2013 list of signees, bringing the signing class to 21 total players. The 6-0, 233-pound Waters played on both sides of the ball at Bearden, but was recruited by the Red Wolves as a defensive player. Waters was named all-district 4-AAA as a senior after helping lead the Bulldogs to an 8-3 record and the state playoffs in 2012.
“Coach (Steve) Caldwell does a great job in recruiting, and he had a relationship with Trent after spending time recruiting him in the past,” said Harsin. “Trent has been on both sides of the ball, has good size and can play a lot of position on the football field. He is very competitive – you can tell he loves football, and we felt after getting to know him that he has exactly the kind of mentality you want in a football player. We recruited him to play on the defensive side of the ball, but he can play a lot of different positions to help a football team.”
Also an All-KIL?selection, Waters recorded 101 rushing attempts for 895 yards (8.9 average) and nine touchdowns for his junior and senior seasons combined. He was also responsible for 93 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions over that span as well.
As a senior, Waters rushed for 479 yards and five touchdowns on 49 attempts (9.8 avg.) while also posting 13 receptions for 219 yards (16.8 avg.) and two touchdowns. Defensively, he posted 40 tackles, six tackles for loss, a sack and an interception.
Waters’ junior campaign saw him post 52 rushing attempts for 416 yards (8.0 average) and five touchdowns. His defensive statistics included 53 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack and an interception.
