Northwood’s Kelsye Baker doubled in the top of the ninth to score Kendall Smith and Aubrey Moron and give the Lady Falcons a 7-5 win against St. Louis Catholic in Lake Charles.
Airline got past Denham Springs 5-3 in the Class 5A playoffs, while Haughton and North Caddo were eliminated from the 5A and 2A ranks, respectively. Stanley, which advanced to Sulphur last season, topped Doyline 16-1 in its opener.
Sabine Parish showed up big in the Class B playoffs with top-seeded Florien pounding Singer 19-0, Converse blasting Simsboro 16-0, Zwolle shutting out Summerfield 13-0 and Negreet easing past Choudrant 4-1.
Northwood’s win allows it to advance to the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs. The Lady Falcons (12-13) will host Neville either Friday or Saturday. Those teams played during spring break with Neville winning 2-1.
“We competed hard ,” Northwood coach Greg Swearengin said. “We got down 3-0, fought back to tie it, took the lead, then gave it up, but got what we needed in the end.”
Smith took the win on the mound, while Kaitlyn Williams contributed a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Jenna Blythe added a double with two RBIs.
The Lady Vikings scored all five runs in the third inning of a road contest to move into the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
“It was a hard-fought game by both teams, but we got the timely hits, played great defense and got good pitching from our freshman pitcher,” Airline coach Lynne Roberts said. “The kids played with a lot of heart.”
Carly McIntosh, Katie Smith and Cheyenne Hutchins had a pair of hits each for Airline, while Jamie Roberts took the win on the mound.
Lindsay Fronzaglio, Madison Rowland and Sarah Martin also contributed hits for Airline, which will host the St. Amant later this week.
Stanley advanced in the Class B race behind Carla Crawford and Amber Smith, who were 3-for-4 each and combined for five RBIs. Emily and Melissa Welborn contributed a pair of hits each, while Kyley Cloud earned the win. The second-seeded Panthers will host 15-seed Forest later this week with a trip to Sulphur on the line.
Kinder eliminated North Caddo 3-1 despite a home run and a 2-for-3 effort for the Lady Rebels’ Kassie Harris.
Haughton found the going tough in Slidell when Northshore came away with a 12-2 win to give the Lady Bucs a first-round playoff loss for two consecutive seasons.
