ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Edgewood's Cayton wins state player of week

By

Junior David Cayton helped give Edgewood more than just an AISA-record winning streak last weekend.

Cayton was the state’s defense/special teams player of the week. With quarterback Taylor Hawthorne winning a regular-season offensive award, the Wildcats are the first team this year to have two winners.

Cayton — Hawthorne, too — played a significant role in Edgewood’s 61-52 win over Clarke Prep in Friday’s Class AA championship game.

Clarke Prep, with a 10-point third-quarter lead, was in scoring position when Cayton returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown.

A successful onsides kick led to the go-ahead touchdown.

“His scoop-and-score was huge,” Edgewood coach Bobby Carr said. “We were going to have to have a break or two, and that helped start it.”

Cayton added a last-minute interception and finished with six tackles. The win was the 45th straight for Edgewood, which set an AISA record.

“He was a guy who didn’t even play football last year,” Carr said. “This is great for him.”

Auburn’s Bradley Northcutt was the week’s top offensive star for his part in a 42-35 win over G.W. Carver in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

Northcutt finished 18-of-31 passing for 305 yards and two touchdowns, including a 32-yard TD to Tyus O’Neal-El with 59 seconds remaining.
