Random Lake senior Delaney Sinnen entered the fall cross country season with a championship-or-bust mentality. She left with a state title.
Sinnen, the Sheboygan Press All-Area Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, cruised to a first-place finish at last month’s WIAA Division 3 State Meet with a winning time of 14 minutes, 22 seconds to complete an undefeated season and accomplish her ultimate goal of being a champion.
“It was amazing. There’s no words to describe it,” Sinnen said soon after winning the race.
The Rams standout was rarely challenged during the season, and it helped her earn a scholarship to compete for the NCAA Division I University of Minnesota next year.
“I worked hard all summer,” Sinnen said during the season. “I never trained during the summer in previous years, so when I knew I could be a state champion, I think it drove me to start earlier and do more stuff than I did seasons before.”
Sinnen outpaced her State competition by 46 seconds, her sectional competition by 35 seconds and repeated as winner of the Sheboygan Lutheran-hosted Sheboygan County Invitational by becoming just the second person to best the 15-minute mark with her time of 14:57 — more than one minute ahead of the second-place finisher.
“It helps having someone as good as her, because not only is she motivated, but others see that too and get that sense,” Random Lake coach Stephanie Ohme said prior to sectionals. “She is such a great example, a nice leader.”
