Ankeny school board to have special meeting for resignation of activities director

By

Ankeny school district activities director Kevin Biggs, who has helped the community’s transition from one to two high schools, said he is resigning after two years in the job.
Biggs said he wants to spend more time with his family. The Ankeny School Board will accept his resignation at a special meeting today.
He told the Register on Thursday that he is leaving to spend more time with his wife and three children aged 1 to 7. He said some of his days begin before sunrise and last until 11 p.m.
“There were stretches where I didn’t see my kids for three or four days,” Biggs said. “That wasn’t fair to my kids and my wife.”
Biggs’ last day is June 30. He spent two years in the job, directing an athletic program that won state championships in football, softball, baseball during that span.
He also helped supervise the transition from one to two high schools in the community. He had a role in hiring coaching staffs at Ankeny and Centennial schools, conducting more than 100 job interviews. He also helped shape the identity of Centennial, which opens in the fall, from team uniforms to a school song.
“That has got to be the greatest experience of my career,” Biggs said. “I think people are about to see that great things are about to happen.”
Fort Dodge’s Tom Kinseth was hired as Centennial’s activities director in March.
Biggs arrived from California two years ago. He was thrust into a job that required balancing different constituencies in the community as the second high school is added.
“You have to be able to listen,” Biggs said. “You have to be able to put the ego on the shelf.”
He said Ankeny is a thriving athletic community.
“We tried to build a culture of success,” Biggs said. “We hired good people, we have great parents who have had kids involved in programs since they could walk.”
