ST. PAUL – Annandale’s Matt Miller hit two free throws with 8.3 seconds left to lift the Cardinals to the Class 2A third place title Saturday over Esko at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul.
The Cardinals (22-10) led by as much as 13, but Esko made a trio of three-pointers in the final two minutes to keep the game within a single possession.
Kory Deadrick’s three put Esko up 58-57 with 16 seconds left. Miller then drove to the hoop for a layup where he was fouled and hit both free throws.
Miller led the Cardinals with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds and Brett Ahsenmacher had nine points and four steals.
Deadrick led Esko (27-6) with 28 points and 14 rebounds and Marc Peterson had 24 points. Esko went 11 of 24 from three-point range. Peterson hit six triples and Deadrick had five.
ST. PAUL – The Cardinals (31-2) fell for only the second time on the season with a loss in the Class A third-place game.
Upsala had 25 turnovers. Rushford-Peterson had a 24-9 scoring advantage in points off those turnovers.
Cole Kingsley led the Trojans (28-4) with 10 points and Jorli Hauge had nine points and 12 rebounds.
Avery Smieja’s double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds led the Cardinals. Smieja also had four blocks.
