With the conference season ending in their home pool on Saturday, the Appleton North/East boys’ swim team closed it out with a bang, winning the conference title in convincing style at Appleton North.

North/East finished with 579 points, 112 points more than runner-up Oshkosh West.

The Lightning also won nine of the 12 events, with Oshkosh North/Lourdes winning two and Neenah one.

“It’s awesome,” said North/East swimmer Jordan Kinney, who won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and was part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. “I was surprised conference was here again because we had it here last year. It’s awesome to be able to finish the year out in your home pool with a championship.”

As important as the first-place finishes were for the Lightning, the work done by swimmers who improved upon their seeding with higher finishes effectively gave North/East bonus points.

“We had a lot of that today,” North/East coach Scott Stepanski said. “Jonah Vandenberg did one of those today. All across the board we had those guys. They were ready today. Ethan Farina had a good meet. Andrew Johnson. These guys take that role and it really does count. It shows in a meet like this.”

Vandenberg, for example, was the 15th seed in the 200-yard individual medley with a seed time of 2:35.48. Vandenberg swam the event with a time of 2:20.62, finishing in seventh.

North/East’s Garner Kohrell was part of four first-place finishes. The freshman outdueled Ryan Revolinski in the 200 individual medley, won the 100 butterfly by more than five seconds and swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“It feels great as a freshman to be part of some of the upper relay teams,” Kohrell said. “I thought the team had an overall great day.”

Just one record was broken at the meet but it was a long-standing one.

Appleton North/East’s Dan Gilbertson won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of :59.31, breaking the conference record time of 1:01.29 set in 2003 by Nathan Zabel.

“I wasn’t really shooting for it,” Gilbertson said. “It’s been in my reach the whole year. I just had to wait until conference. I was just hoping to get it as low as possible and go out with a bang.

“I hope the record I broke stays for another 10 years.”

In diving, Oshkosh North/Lourdes’ Max Zellmer and Neenah’s Draven Feustel continued their back-and-forth battle.

Feustel, who beat Zellmer by 1.45 points at the Neenah Invitational on Jan. 12, had the tables turned on him, with Zellmer winning by 2.7 points for the conference crown.

In the 500-yard freestyle, North/East’s Manny Hernandez fended off the challenge of Fond du Lac’s Cameron Van Beek to win by .42 seconds. Hernandez led for the first 400 yards before falling behind by .1 seconds at the start of the bell lap. Hernandez then turned in his second-fastest lap of the event (:27.79) to defeat Van Beek.
