Toenjes commits: Northeastern Wisconsin Lutheran senior Nathan Toenjes committed on Tuesday to play basketball at Concordia University Nebraska.
The 6-foot-7 post player played a key role on the Blazers’ WIAA Division 5 state runner-up team as junior. Toenjes averaged 13.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to earn first-team all-Packerland Conference honors last season.
Vanden Avond stays on the attack: St. Norbert College junior forward Katie Vanden Avond was named the Midwest Conference women’s soccer offensive player of the week on Monday.
The De Pere native netted hat tricks in consecutive days to power the Green Knights to victories against Concordia (4-3) and a shutout of Lawrence (4-0).
Vanden Avond, who ranked second in NCAA Division III for goals scored last season, has 11 goals in seven games this season, including three hat tricks. She also has five assists and four game-winning goals for St. Norbert (4-1-2).
Kuepers stays undefeated: UW-Eau Claire sophomore Paige Kuepers was part of the Wisconsin Intercolliegiate Athletic Conference’s women’s tennis doubles team of the week.
The former Green Bay Southwest standout earned the honor along with junior Renee Nelson after the pair won three matches at No. 3 doubles to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Kuepers and Nelson picked up the Blugolds’ only win with a 9-7 victory against UW-Whitewater on Sept. 13 and followed with victories against UW-River Falls and College of St. Benedict (Minn.) on Sept. 14.
UWGB assistant named UW-Oshkosh coach: Scott Beyer was named head coach of the UW-Oshkosh softball team on Wednesday.
Beyer had spent the previous three years as an assistant at UWGB, helping the program go 62-74.
