Knights open TEC with win

FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – Northeastern opened its Tri-Eastern Conference schedule Thursday with a 27-25, 25-18, 25-14 win over Union City.
Michaela Barker had six aces for the Knights (2-0, 1-0), while Amanda Lee had a team-high eight kills, Emily Loden added seven and Kaitlyn Shafer had six.

“We had another good night of serving,” Northeastern coach Jerry Middleton said.

Northeastern travels Saturday to Jay County and will face Anderson, Jay County and Marion.

JV score: Northeastern won 25-21, 14-25, 15-9

Coach gets win in return

CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. – Greg Seidner’s return to coaching Lincoln started off well Thursday as the Golden Eagles defeated reigning sectional champion Eastern Hancock 25-18, 25-10, 25-20.

Kristen Meal and Jordan Bryant both had 12 kills, Haley Hall had 12 digs, nine service points and an ace and Kiersten Merida had 32 assists to lead the Golden Eagles.

Sara Maley had 10 service points and an ace.

“We played really well. They had a couple of really nice hitters,” Seidner said of Eastern Hancock. “Our serving, I think, kind of kept them out of their offense. We tried to not allow their two hitters to attack a lot.”

Seidner was 384-247 while coaching the Golden Eagles for 22 seasons before stepping down in 2010.

Lincoln (1-0) plays Monroe Central in the first round of the Union Invitational on Saturday.

JV score: Lincoln won 25-9, 25-11; Sammi Burrows had 13 service points and 12 assists; Alexis Meltzer had five kills, four service points; Shaila Dalrymple had nine service points, five digs.

Pats improve to 2-0

LIBERTY, Ind. – Allison Kassens had 17 kills on 22 attacks, plus a team-high 12 digs as Union County improved to 2-0 Thursday with a 25-10, 25-22, 25-13 win over Knightstown.

Carlea Handley had 16 kills, Danielle Hill added seven and Ella Dills had six.

Bella Pavey had 37 assists, three aces and five digs for the Patriots.

Lauren Lester added nine digs and Hill three solo blocks.

“We were just in a much better rhythm tonight. We really came together a lot better than we did against North Decatur,” Union County coach Chris Wiederhold said by phone.

The Patriots travel Saturday to Wapahani.

Falcons win

WINCHESTER, Ind. – Winchester defeated Randolph Southern 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 Thursday.

Bailey Gates had a team-high eight kills for the Falcons, two aces and three digs while Delaney Miller added seven kills to go along with six solo blocks.

Brandi Marquis had three aces and 20 assists, while Leah Malkey also had three aces.

Brianna Weist and Hayley Myers each had four digs.

JV score: Randolph Southern won 2-1

Owls edge Red Devils

MUNCIE, Ind. – Muncie Burris defeated Richmond 1-0 Thursday.
The Red Devils (0-2) play host to Eaton on Saturday.

Dixie downs Cards

NEW LEBANON, Ohio – Seton Catholic dropped a 4-2 decision on Thursday to Ohio foe Dixie.

Tony Miller and Charlie Stiens scored for the Cardinals, while Brady Gray added an assist.

Seton also fell 2-0 on Tuesday to Twin Valley South. Seton goaltender Cliff Dickman made 12 saves that game.

Trojans edge Spartans

NEW CASTLE, Ind. – Ryan Jones scored the lone goal of the game with about 18 minutes left in the first half Thursday as New Castle edged Connersville 1-0.

Eagle medals, Falcons win

WINCHESTER, Ind. – Ashley Eblen earned medalist honors with a 50, but Winchester defeated Lincoln 230-243 Thursday.
Keslyn Harris led the Falcons with a 52 and Sierrah Love shot 57, while Kayla Patterson added 58 for the Golden Eagles.

FRANKLIN, Ohio – Andrew Ferguson earned medalist honors with a 36 Thursday as Eaton edged Franklin 155-157 at the Franklin Golf Course.
Cameron Willis shot 37 for the Eagles.

Tigers down Devils

HAGERSTOWN, Ind. – Hagerstown swept doubles matches and Ben Tinkle and Jonah McKissick won at singles as the Tigers defeated Richmond’s JV team 4-1 Thursday.

Henrik Stevens and Nick Arnold won at No. 1 doubles, while Jordan Auker and Isaiah Neal did the same at No. 2.

Ross Doughty won at No. 3 singles for Richmond.

Cardinal wins

MODOC, Ind. – Jacob Stamm won the boys race Thursday at Union’s Ethan Cheeseman Invitational, leading the Cardinals to a third-place finish at the eight-team event.

Seton Catholic coach Todd Barker said it was the first time Seton placed as a team at an event.

Sarah Hornak finished third in the girls race.
