Girls Basketball: Tigers rebound for victory

MUNCIE, Ind. – Hagerstown rebounded after a tough loss Tuesday and defeated Cowan 46-22 Thursday.

Savannah Houck led a strong rebounding effort with 12 of the Tigers’ 45, while Tawni Brown added 10.

Hayley Rogers led all scorers with 12 points, while Brown and Gabby Willis had eight apiece and Houck, Kaley Caudill, and Julie Robinson each contributed six.

“We just got pounded by Shenandoah Tuesday and to turn around and come prepared to play like we did tonight was really satisfying and really good for the girls,” Hagerstown coach Chris Oliger said.

The Tigers (4-2) travel to TEC foe Union County next Wednesday.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Rylee Davis scored 19 points and DeAnn Kauffman added 13 as Union defeated Muncie South 55-38 Thursday.

The Rockets (4-2) play host Tuesday to Lincoln.

Trail falls

ARCANUM, Ohio – National Trail dropped a 46-43 Cross County Conference game at Arcanum Thursday.

“We had a couple looks at the end to get back in it and tie it, we just couldn’t get them to fall,” Trail coach Troy Ferguson said by phone. “Our kids played better. … We’re getting there.”

Kate Deaton and Miranda Mize each scored 10 points to lead the Blazers (1-3, 1-1).

National Trail plays host Monday to Eaton.

Eaton wins conference opener

Eaton opened SWBL Southwestern Division Play with a 57-34 victory at Oakwood Thursday, also improving to 4-0 overall.

The Eagles had to overcome a slow start, erasing a 7-2 deficit in the first quarter to take a 17-12 lead after the opening frame.

“It was a big win,” Eaton coach Gary Peffly said by phone. “We did not play very well, I thought that we kind of played laid back, I don’t know if we took them for granted or not, but once we got going everything started going well. Our press hurt them, we started pressing about 3/4 of the way.”

Autumn Whirley had 20 points to lead the Eagles (4-0, 1-0), while Libby Springmier had 11 along with four steals and three assists. Danielle Karns had 10 points and Elizabeth Tolliver had a team-high 10 rebounds. The Eagles had 14 steals as a team.

Eaton travels Saturday to Monroe.

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. – Connersville defeated Milan 48-36 Wednesday.

Middle School Basketball: UC sweeps

BROOKVILLE, Ind. – Union County swept Brookville Thursday with the Patriots winning 53-24 in seventh-grade basketball action and the eighth-graders also winning 65-33.

Blake Fields scored 23 points to lead Union County’s seventh grade, while Ryan Hensley and Tyler Osborne each scored 10 and Mook Shepler had 16 assists.

Derek Dearth led four eighth-graders in double figures with 14 points, while Mason Miller had 13, Preston Scott 11 and Luke Haas 10.

Both UC teams are now 4-0.

Spartans top Tigers

Connersville defeated Hagerstown’s eighth grade Thursday.

Kyle Cochran led the Tigers with nine points, while Kaleb Slagle had a team-high six rebounds.

Cardinals fall

Monroe Central defeated Seton Catholic 42-22 Wednesday.

Nick Berger and Trey Bartkus each had four points to lead the Cardinals.
