Boys basketball: Knights rout Blackhawks

FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – Five Knights finished in double figures Saturday as Northeastern ran away with a 90-23 victory over Cowan.

Craig Dingwerth led the team with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Alex Smith had 19 points, Corey Dingwerth and Grant Esposito each had 14 and Tyler Smith had 11.

Tyler Smith also had five assists and four steals for the Knights (2-1).

“We played really well tonight,” Northeastern coach Brent Ross said by phone. “I think we’ve still got to work to do, but I think we’re starting to understand each other. I thought we did a lot better job of moving the basketball, we had 27 assists on 42 baskets. I think when you share the basketball to get it in the paint — our two post players (Craig and Corey Dingwerth) combined for 26 points.”

The Knights travel next Friday to Eastern Hancock.

Boys basketball: Cardinals win in OT

Cliff Dickman scored 31 points on Saturday as Seton Catholic defeated Providence Cristo Rey 78-73 in overtime at Chuck Mosey Gymnasium.

Dickman also added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Desmond Bane finished with 23 points and eight rebounds for Seton, while Rhett Butler had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Seton (1-2) travels Tuesday to Randolph Southern.

LIBERTY, Ind. – Hunter Miller scored a career-high 25 points as Union County defeated Knightstown 66-36 Saturday in a make-up game rescheduled from Friday. Braden Norris added 13 points for the Patriots (2-1), while Kory Finch had 11. The Patriots open TEC play next Friday with a visit from Hagerstown.

UNION CITY, Ind. – Mississinawa Valley (Ohio) handed Union City its first loss on Saturday, defeating the Indians 61-53.

Tre Burton led Union City with 22 points, while Isaac Davison scored 12.

Union City (3-1) travels Tuesday to Adams Central.

Girls basketball: Eaton earns league win

MONROE, Ohio – Eaton’s unbeaten start to the season continued Saturday as the Eagles handed SWLB Southwestern Division foe Monroe a 78-16 defeat.

Autumn Whirley led all scorers with 21 points. Elizabeth Tolliver netted 12 and a team-high nine rebounds, while Libby Springmier scored 10.

Katie Yoder added seven points for Eaton, while coach Gary Peffly praised the defense of Springmier and Michelle McKinney for holding Monroe’s leading scorer to zero points.

Eaton (5-0, 2-0) plays at county foe National Trail on Monday.

“It’s a really good start,” Peffly said. “We still have a lot of things we have to improve on.”

Girls basketball: Rebels 4-0 in MEC

SELMA, Ind. – Morgan Acton had 20 points and a team-high five rebounds Saturday, helping Randolph Southern move to 4-0 in MEC play with a 69-53 victory at Wapahani.

“This was a big win for us, both conference-wise and confidence-wise,” Rebels coach Jerimy Stephan said. “Our conference, we needed this game, big-time, and everyone stepped up and contributed.”

Maddi Kramer had 16 points and eight steals for the Rebels (6-1, 4-0), Shelbie Hathaway had 13 points and Cameron Whitesel had 10 points. Logan Saylor had five points and nine assists, while Kara Snyder also had five points.

The Rebels host Union City next Saturday.

Christina Casperson scored 13 points to lead the Falcons and added a team-high seven rebounds. Delaney Miller scored 11 for the Falcons.

The Falcons (1-6) travel Tuesday to South Adams.

Wrestling: Red Devils 4th at invite

MUNCIE, Ind. – Richmond heavyweight Nate Trawick, Alston Bane (132 pounds) and Andrew Rice (170) finished first in their respective weight classes during Saturday’s Muncie South Invitational.

The Red Devils were fourth as a team, one point out of third.

Blake Hillard (113) was second, with QuinDarius Deloney (106), Ryan Weireter (126) and Jeremy Patrick (160) finishing third and Kendrick Krieder (220) fourth. Richmond is at home Tuesday against Rushville.
