THE WINNER: Casey Benson


School: Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Guard
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 180 pounds

Athletic achievement: Heled the Aztecs to a 29-4 record and the Division I state title this past season. Benson averaged 20.7 points, 3.7 assists, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 57 percent from inside the arc. The 2013 Arizona Republic Player of the Year, he scored 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished six assists in a 63-59 win over Pinnacle (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the state final.

Academic excellence: Benson has maintained a 3.93 GPA.

Exemplary character: A devoted parishioner in his church community, he has donated his time as a prayer group leader and has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church youth group.


“In addition to being a tremendous player, Casey Benson is a true leader and very coachable,” said Corona del Sol head coach Sam Duane. “He is very competitive and he makes players around him better. He does not care about individual stats and only cares about what it takes to win.”

THE FUTURE: Benson will be a senior next year.
