Season recap: After an emotional week, sorting through a family issue, Montoya finished fourth in the 1600 at the Chandler Rotary Invitational. That just set the wheels spinning to make up for that disappointing finish. Even though his workouts were programmed to get him prepared for the Dream Mile in New York during Memorial Day weekend and the Prefontaine the following weekend in Oregon, Montoya finished the high school season in impressive fashion. He broke his own Arizona record in the 3200 at the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational at 8 minutes, 47.07 seconds. At the Division I championships at Mesa Community College, Montoya won the 3200, came within a second of breaking the all-time state record in the 1600 with a time of 4:05.89 and, in his final race on the same day, broke the all-time state record in the 800 at 1:50.19.
College choice: Arizona State.
Montoya’s comment: “It was a starting point for me to recover from what happened at Chandler. As we all know, sometimes performances, as your season goes, won’t always be what you want it to. We’re going to hit some bumps. My coach and family were very supportive. I got past that. We came back to Arcadia, Mt. SAC, had great times. We’re still recovering and getting better each day.”
Coach Kris Norton’s comment: “Our main focus was on the summer. He had an intense workout on that Monday before the state meet. It was remarkable that he was able to do as well as he did.”
