Plant City, FL — Coming off a first-ever 10-0 season, the Durant Cougars were eager to get the 2013 season underway hosting the Armwood Hawks in a non-district contest.

But Armwood was also ready, wanting to show everyone they are still one of the top teams in the state.

Using the running game, the Hawks controlled the scoreboard and the clock.

Senior running back Craig Carrington got Armwood on the board in the first quarter with a two-yard dive.

Then it was senior Greg Newton’s turn, powering up the middle for a 10-yard blast, helping give Armwood had a 20-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, the defense got in on the scoring action. Senior Kyle Gibson scored on an interception and Jordan Griffin got into the endzone on a 10-yard fumble recovery.

Next week, Armwood begins district play in Class 6A-8 when they host Blake, while Durant travels to Sickles for a non-district game.
