Assumption pitcher honors departed classmate

By

Davenport Assumption pitcher Andrew Quested dragged a foot through the pitcher’s mound dirt every inning to remember a departed friend.
Quested, a junior, honored classmate Caleb Neff by marking his initials in the Principal Park soil. Neff, 17, died suddenly on July 17 due to an unknown medical condition. Clear Lake defeated Assumption 6-2 in the Class 2-A state baseball championship Saturday.
“He was one of my best friends, about five of us were really tight,” Quested said. “We wanted to bring it home for him.”
Quested’s baseball cap had Neff’s initials stitched into the fabric, along with a cross. He said he was motivated by memories of Neff, a football player at Assumption.
“A couple of times, I felt like I needed something extra, and I thought of him,” Quested said.
