Keiondre Wedderburn is new to walking the halls at Howard High School in Macon but he is no stranger to the wrestling mat.

His coach, Jim Turner explains, “Keiondre is a special talent. He has just a lot of natural ability and instincts and has been trained very well nothing we had to do with actually, but he is a phenomenal wrestler.”
Wedderburn transferred to Howard this school year from Miami, Florida, but has been wrestling for 5 years, a sport he loves.

“I just like the competition one-on-one with someone else and with this sport,” says Wedderburn. “Everything you put into it you’re going to get out of it.”

On the mat, Keiondre has been lights out. Competing in the 170 pound weight class, K-Dre has only been taken down once.

Wedderburn says, “I really haven’t faced too tough of challenges this year. The hardest kid I faced this year was a guy from South Effingham because I faced him once before this year, so they game planned. And the second time around, it was a tougher match because of his defense.”

But the junior has managed to remain undefeated at 42-0 and is the only unbeaten wrestler in Bibb County and one of the few in the state.

“He’s got it all”, says Turner. “He’s very strong and quick and with his training, he’s just a notch above everybody a lot of other folks.”

Grades are also important to this Husky. He says he is in the process of improving his 2.8 to a 3.0 because he wants to continue this sport at the next level.

“Because you can’t get into a good D1 school with bad grades”, explains the junior. “Their scholastic standards are very high and I want to hold myself to that standard.”
“I don’t think theres any question that he can do it:, echos Turner.

An individual sport from a student athlete with the ultimate team mentality. When asked what’s the goal for state championships this weekend, he replied, “Go Huskies.”

Individual state tournaments began Thursday and continue throughout Saturday. Wedderburn has the chance to be the first Husky to win a wrestling state title.
