Ida Baker High golfer Ross Lally has focused on going to state since this summer.
Despite a frustrating high school season, he peaked at just the right time. Lally shot a 72 on Monday to win the Region 2A-7 boys individual title at Stoneybrook Golf Club.
Barron Collier (317) edged Lemon Bay (318) to win the team title. The top two teams and two individuals not on those teams qualify for state, which will be Oct. 29-30 at Mission Inn Resort and Club (El Campeon) in Howey-in-the-Hills.
“He’s had this circled on his calendar since July,” Ida Baker High golf coach Scott Conforte said. “It’s the best round I’ve ever seen him play.”
Conforte thought Lally could have a good day after he shot a 3-under after 11 holes during a practice round at Stoneybrook on Thursday. Lally also has played the course well in other visits he’s made.
“I was very anxious for this day. It was very important to me,” Lally said. “My entire season wasn’t good. I was focusing too much on a score.
“Today, my goal was to shoot for the center of the green and two-putt.”
Lally said he shot the ball straight all day. He made a couple of 10-footers to save par. His consistency was shown by him having a 36 on both the front and back nine. He had two birdies and two bogeys.
“I didn’t have to motivate him, he’s motivated to do well,” Conforte said.
“He knew he was good enough to play at state.”
Gateway Charter’s Blake Lolato shot a 73 to also qualify for state.
