Baseball: Garnet Gulls rally in 7th to beat Seraphs

Danny Pfefferkorn’s single in the top of the seventh inning scored Nick Fiore with the tie-breaking run as Point Pleasant Beach rallied for three runs in the seventh and defeated Mater Dei, 6-5, in a Shore Conference Class B South game on Friday.

RBI singles by Fiore and Sean Struncius tied the game.

John Van Schoick pitched three innings of hitless relief to improve to 4-0. He struck out two and walked one. Van Schoick also went 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored a run.

Mike Allegretta went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Point Beach (8-2, 8-2), which avenged an earlier loss to Mater Dei.

JACKSON LIB. 5, MANCHESTER 1: James Sofield struck out nine, walked one and pitched a complete-game six-hitter and Dan Naif had two RBI as the Lions (8-3, 7-2) defeated the Hawks (6-5, 6-4) and moved back into a tie with Monsignor Donovan (10-2, 7-2) for first place in Class B South.

Naif had a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the third that broke a 1-1 tie. Dan Serreino had a suicide squeeze bunt in the fifth.

KEYPORT 6, KEANSBURG 4: Connor Thomson’s two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh capped a four-run rally and gave the Red Raiders (4-6, 4-6) the win over the Titans (3-7, 3-7) in a Class B Central game.

Thomson also picked up the win by pitching three innings of scoreless relief as Keyport rallied from a 4-0 deficit after 41/2 innings. He gave up two hits.

A sacrifice fly by Corey Romanetz and a run-scoring double by Joe Ruth tied the game and set up Thomson’s heroics.

FREEHOLD TWP. 6, RUMSON-FH 2: The defending Monmouth County Tournament champion and MCT No. 15 seed Patriots (5-8) parlayed the only four hits they had in the game into five runs in the bottom of the fifth as they broke a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat the No. 18 seed Bulldogs (5-7) in a MCT first-round game.

Chris Talbott began the winning rally with a double with one out. Steve Derby’s triple plated Talbott. Nick Cardace followed with a run-scoring single. After two walks and a runner being picked off, Mike Alexander unloaded a three-run homer for his first varsity homer.

Talbott pitched the first five innings to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out four and allowed two hits.

PINELANDS 5, POINT BORO 2: Joey Lunn scattered seven hits in a complete-game performance, Cory Burke had an RBI ground out in the first and an RBI double in the sixth and John Arch had a bases-loaded walk in the second and a run-scoring single in the sixth as the Wildcats (3-8. 3-7) defeated the Panthers (6-6, 4-5) in a Class B South game.

TR NORTH 5, TR EAST 0: University of Delaware-bound senior right-hander Ron Marinaccio struck out a career-high 14 and scattered five hits to pick up his first win of the season, Julian Feliz went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in a three-run fourth, and Mike Miraglia had a two-run single in the sixth as the Mariners (8-4, 6-4), ranked No. 6 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, avenged an earlier loss to the Raiders (6-5, 5-5) in a Class A South game.

SHORE 10, HOWELL 5: Mike Blaney went 2-for-4 with two RBI and T.J. Semkowski and Andrew Schultz also had two RBI apiece as the Blue Devils (2-10) snapped a 10-game losing streak with a win over the No. 3 Rebels (7-4) in a nondivisional game at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood.

TR SOUTH 14, SOUTHERN 1: Russel Messler continued his torrid hitting by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, Dylan DiPolivere and Christian Campbell each went 3-for-4 with two RBI and senior right-hander Erick Fricks pitched five innings of one-run ball to improve to 4-1 as the No. 5 Indians (9-3, 7-3) defeated the Rams (1-9, 1-9) in a Class A South game.
