John Jay High School baseball coach Tom O’Hare said the first 20 games of the season “are all about trying to find out what your boys are made of.” In the Patriots’ season opener, he got a sneak peek.
John Jay roared back from an early three-run deficit to win at home, 9-6 over Somers on Friday.
After giving up four runs in the top of the second, the Patriots scored six in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Laffin clocked a bases-clearing double to put John Jay ahead for good. Jordan Urban followed with a double of his own — one of three for Urban in three at-bats — to keep the rally going. Urban finished with four RBI.
Tommy Vetrano scored three runs for the Patriots, and Connor Martin also doubled.
Tyler Kardas (1-0) earned the win as John Jay’s starter, and Matt Lisella collected the save, pitching the last 21/3 innings.
“Matt Lisella did exactly what he does. He comes in to close games and keeps us in it,” O’Hare said.
John Jay visits Yorktown on Monday.
