Baseball Roundup: St. John Vianney shuts out Manalapn


Junior catcher Anthony Santoro broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Dan Schirmacher and Justin Chin combined on a two-hitter as No. 5 seed St. John Vianney defeated No. 13 seed Manalapan, 2-0, on Friday in a Monmouth County Tournament quarterfinal.

Schirmacher struck out four, walked two in six innings. Chin struck out two, including the game’s final batter with runners on first and second and hit a batter, to pick up the save.

WALL 5, FREEHOLD 2: Junior right-hander Tyler Swiggart pitched a complete-game five-hitter to improve to 6-0 and Ryan Orender hit a three-run single to right center to cap a four-run first inning as the No. 3 seed Crimson Knights (14-3) defeated the No. 14 seed Colonials (11-7) in a MCT round of 16 game.

MARLBORO 6, MONMOUTH 3: Dustin Jensen’s RBI single in the top of the sixth broke a 3-3 tie as the No. 11 seed Mustangs (10-8) scored four runs to wipe out a 3-2 deficit and defeat the No. 6 seed Falcons (11-7) in a MCT round of 16 game.

JACKSON MEMORIAL 9, COLTS NECK 5: Mike Schmidt drew a two-out bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth to break a 5-5 tie and Kyle Johnson then hit a three-run double on the next pitch as the No. 1 Jaguars (18-1) defeated the Cougars (8-10) for their 14th straight win.

TOMS RIVER SOUTH 8, BARNEGAT 5: Russell Messler went 2-for-4 with two RBI, three stolen bases and scored two runs, Ryan Shiffer was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and John Puleo had a two-out, two-run triple in the first as the No. 4 Indians (14-6) defeated the Bengals (7-11) in a nondivisional game.

BRICK MEMORIAL 4, LAKEWOOD 2: The Mustangs (9-10) scored three runs with two out in the top of the seventh as they defeated the Piners (3-14) and kept their hopes of qualifying for the Shore Conference Tournament alive.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 6, MANASQUAN 5: Pinch-hitter Julius Saporito’s two-run single capped a four-run sixth inning and gave the Patriots (8-12) a 6-0 lead, and Rob Yuhas got the game’s final two outs with the tying run on third, including a strikeout with the go-ahead run on first for the final out, as Freehold Township hung on for the win over the Warriors (3-14) in a nondivisional game.

CBA 9, ST. ROSE 2: Freshman Luca Dalatri pitched six innings of three-hit ball and Mike Caput and Anthony Critelli each had two RBI as the No. 3 Colts (13-3) defeated the Purple Roses (14-3) in a nondivisional game.

MANCHESTER 4, LACEY 2: Ed White hit a two-run homer, went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and also pitched a complete-game six-hitter as the Hawks (10-8) defeated the Lions (2-16) in a nondivisional game.

RED BANK 1, PATERSON EASTSIDE 0: Ryan Wikoff and A.J. Forgione combined on a four-hitter and Austin Morrongiello’s single with two out in the top of the fifth scored Tyler Cook with the only run as the Bucs (8-11) defeated the Ghosts (8-10) in a nonconference game
