A five-run sixth inning put Wall in complete command of its game against Ocean on Thursday and then the Crimson Knights had to hang on for a 7-6 win that coupled with Matawan’s loss to Freehold moved it into first place in Shore Conference Class B North.
Ryan Orender had a two-run double, Luke Malone a sacrifice fly and Matt Tancredi an RBI single in the sixth as the Crimson Knights (9-2, 7-1) built a 7-0 lead.
Ocean (6-6, 5-4), which was no-hit for five innings by Wall’s Tyler Swiggert, then had six straight hits with two out to score six runs. A two-run double by Nick Ferrara and an RBI double by Jordan Bell highlighted the rally.
Wall snapped a two-game losing streak.
FREEHOLD 7, MATAWAN 6: Jake Yanez threw a complete-game and catcher Kevin Smith went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI as the Colonials (6-5, 4-5) defeated the Huskies (8-3, 6-2) in a Class B North game and recorded their third straight win.
The Colonials jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and then held on.
MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 2, CENTRAL 1: Dan McGeehan’s two-out single to left in the bottom of the ninth scored Chris Calderone with the winning run as the Griffins (10-2, 7-2) moved into first-place in Class B South by a half-game over idle Jackson Liberty with the win over the Golden Eagles (5-5, 5-4).
McGeehan also plated Calderone with the tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a ground ball to short with the bases loaded and nobody out.
Central had taken the lead in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly Josh DellaPietro.
Brad Lee picked up the win with two innings of scorless relief.
RED BANK CATHOLIC 9, ST. JOHN VIANNEY 5: Mike Rescigno threw five scoreless innings, struck out seven and walked two and went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Caseys (11-1, 10-0), ranked No. 2 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, increased their lead in Class A Central to three games with the win over the Lancers (8-3, 7-3).
The result snapped St. John Vianney’s seven-game winning streak.
Matt Kurdewan had two RBI for Red Bank Catholic.
Evan Pietronico continued his red-hot hitting by going 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth and a grand slam in the seventh for St. John Vianney.
JACKSON MEM. 1, LACEY 0: Matt Guarino’s single in the top of the fifth scored Matt Thaiss with the only run and Jake Harlinski scattered six hits in a complete-game performance as the No. 1 Jaguars (10-1, 10-0) defeated the Lions (0-11, 0-10) in a Class A South game and moved within two wins of clinching the divisional title.
HOWELL 3, COLTS NECK 1: Zach Loroesh struck out nine, walked one and pitched a complete-game five-hitter as the No. 6 Rebels (7-3, 7-3) remained a game behind CBA in Class A North with the win over the No. 8 Cougars (6-5, 5-5).
