The Spackenkill High School baseball team is headed to the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournament.
The Spartans will face MHAL Division 4 champion Rhinebeck in Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinal in Pine Plains, having won Tuesday’s one-game playoff against Onteora, 4-3, in Rhinebeck to claim the Division 3 crown.
“I think the kids are excited,” said Don Neise, whose Spartans improved to 17-2. “We played a really competitive team, and we responded well.”
Down 3-1 after five innings, Onteora knotted the score with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, though, Billy Winnis turned a single into the decisive run.
Spackenkill’s catcher (1 for 3) singled to start the bottom of the sixth. Already in motion as part of a hit-and-run, Winnis advanced to third on a groundout. He then scored on a wild pitch, allowing reliever Justin Etts to close the door in the top of the seventh.
“He really manufactured a run,” said Neise, referring to Winnis.
Etts was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, while teammate Blake Kawalski (1 for 3) drove in another run.
