After winning the first league crown since he took over and posting the best record in the city, it was easy to single out who should get top honors in the coaching ranks for the boys’ basketball season.
Battle Creek Central’s Greg Williams is our Coach of the Year for the 2012-13 Enquirer All-City Boys’ Basketball Team as he led the Bearcats to a Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference East Division title — his first as a head coach. BCC rolled through the SMAC East, going 13-1, with its only division loss coming when its top player Trevin Alexander was out with injury.
Williams also helped BCC to an impressive 19-3 record overall with what can be considered a young team, with only one senior starter in Alexander.
Williams heads the list of Bearcats on the All-City squad, which also includes Alexander and juniors Mohammed Albagami and Elijah Jackson.
Lakeview, which finished third in the tough SMAC East at 8-6, went 9-12 overall and adds Devon Daniels, Donnie Ernsberger and Brennan Kerr to the team.
Pennfield, at 11-11 overall and 9-9 in the Kalamazoo Valley Association, adds two players to the All-City team in Darin Blocker and Brayden Bennett.
Harper Creek, which went 10-13 overall and won a district title, puts Josh Bass and Alec Fisher on the All-City squad.
St. Philip, which struggled with injuries, but still had a winning record at 13-9, adds Jon Niland and Tyler Hubbard-Neil to the team.
