Central was forced to regroup Tuesday night, and it responded quickly to claim a 52-42 overtime victory in boys basketball against Connersville.
The Bearcats led 38-27 in the fourth quarter before Connersville rallied behind spirited play and several missed bonus free-throw attempts by Central to force overtime.
“One of the big things we’re trying to use with these guys is ‘next play,’ ” Bearcats coach Matt Fine said. “Our guys really did move on (when overtime started). Kaleb Mallory hit a big jumper at the start of overtime, and Jabriel Allen scored after that.
“We got up by four points quickly, and then we buckled down defensively.”
Connersville didn’t score in the extra period.
“We pressured them a little, and they turned the ball over a couple of times,” Fine said. “They had to start shooting quicker than they wanted to.”
Mallory led the Bearcats (5-9) with 16 points, and Allen added 15.
Connersville (6-9) suffered its fifth consecutive loss.
“It was a huge win for us, especially with the stretch of games we’ve playing here on Friday, Saturday, Tuesday,” Fine said.
