The offense was sleepy after the long bus ride, but the defense was more than ready and the West Branch girls basketball team rode it to a 61-36 win over North Cedar and a share of the Cedar Valley Conference title.

West Branch finished the conference season tied with Regina, each with 12-2 records. The Bears improved to 16-5 overall. North Cedar, the CVC fourth-place team, is 8-6, 11-10.

Coach Jarod Tylee thought it was the first conference title for West Branch since 1972.

The Bears made just 2-of-11 shots in the sluggish first quarter but turned it on in the second to take a 29-14 halftime lead. For a while it looked like the only Bear who could make a jumper was Kelli Vaughan off the bench.

But the defense forced 13 first-half turnovers with its quick, trapping zone that befuddled the Knights’ passing. North Cedar made just one of six shots in the second period and was 4-for-16 in the half.

“We got off to kind of a slow start, offensively,” Tylee said. “Defensively, we were pretty good all night. Our girls played hard.”

The Knights managed just two field goals in the third period as the Bears boosted the lead to 45-22.

Ashley Finnegan had 13 points and Heather Poula 12 to lead the Bears.
