The Berlin Hiland High School girls basketball team is set to make the program’s second consecutive Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament appearance – and 13th overall – when the Hawks (25-3) play Reedsville Eastern (23-4) in a Division IV state semifinal contest today at Ohio State’s Value City Arena.
Hiland is ranked second in the final Associated Press state poll of the season. The Hawks are led offensively by junior Regina Hochstetler. Hochstetler, an All-Ohio Special Mention honoree, is averaging 17.7 points per game. Senior Kendra Schlabach, who is averaging 6.5 points per contest, earned All-Ohio Honorable Mention recognition.
Hiland finished as state runner-up in 2012 and the program has won four state titles. The Hawks were last crowned state champs in 2008.
Hiland head coach Dave Schlabach participated in a teleconference with state media members on Monday. Watch the above video to see what he had to say about his team and its banner season.
Tipoff for the state semifinal is set for 1 p.m.
