The North Florida Christian softball team might be one of the youngest in Class 3A. But youth hasn’t stopped the Eagles.

NFC meets Bishop Snyder today in Jacksonville in a Region I semifinal.

Eagles coach Dennis Gorham says his team’s journey this season hasn’t been the easiest. With a roster that includes six middle-schoolers, the Eagles have had to find ways to stay together throughout the year.

“It’s tough when you’re as young as we are,” Gorham said.

“We struggled a little bit early on with games on the road because it’s tough on my younger players. But we pulled it together later in the season with a nice streak of home games, and here we are.”

Junior pitcher Lindsey Bert has helped carry the load for the Eagles. She has thrown 139 innings this season, punctuated by 21 complete games and a sparkling 0.91 ERA.

Bert is also hitting .607 and is second in RBIs with 13, behind only Jackie Lee Wells with 22.

“I can’t say enough about what Lindsey has meant to us this year,” Gorham said.

“Not only has she been lights out on the mound, but we can count on her at the plate, too.”

Gorham admits it has been tough to produce a lot of runs with such a young team. He says the Eagles have manufactured runs when need.

Plus, Gorham knows he can also count on Bert to do her job on the mound, so they just need to find a way to help her out.

“We’ll be playing some small ball, for sure,” Gorham said.

“We’ll drop some bunts, move runners over, and hopefully bring them across the plate. Emotionally, I’ll count on Christine Gonzalez to keep the team together and focused. And then we just let Lindsey work.”

Bert embraces her leadership role.

“With the team being so young, it’s important for the older players like myself to be a leader,” Bert said.
