Big first inning leads Winneconne to another postseason win

Big first innings and the arm of Cody Van Oss have worked well for the Winneconne baseball team this postseason.

The Wolves put up four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Chris Boehnlein’s home run, and Van Oss threw five shutout innings in a 4-1 win over top-seeded Winnebago Lutheran in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal on Tuesday.

“The boys are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Winneconne coach Dan Snyder said. “We jumped out ahead of Lomira with five runs in the first on Friday and held on for the win, and we did it again with four runs in the first this time.”

Hunter Messerschmidt led off the game with a single and advanced to second two batters later when Riley Kallas got a base hit.

Dylan Hecker then singled home Messerschmidt with the game’s first run.

That brought Boehnlein to the plate and he connected on a line drive over the left-center field fence to give the Wolves the 4-0 lead. It was Boehnlein’s first home run of the season.

Van Oss pitched around six walks over five innings and didn’t give up a run to earn the win, while Kallas got the final six outs of the game for the save.

Winnebago Lutheran got its lone run in the sixth inning.

“Cody was placing the ball really well and his change-up was really working. He was keeping the batters off balance,” Snyder said. “When you play good defense behind good pitching, good things can happen.”

Winneconne advance to today’s regional final where it will face Waupaca. The Comets beat the Wolves in both regular-season meetings this season.
