A five-run second inning broke the game open for First Baptist as it defeated Southwest Florida Christian 11-4 in the District 2A-10 championship game Thursday.
“We knew they were a good team that didn’t make a lot of mistakes, so we’d have to have a close scoring game for us to have a chance,” said Kings coach Shawn Bergen. “We just had one bad inning were we just let it get away from us, and that often dictates the result of the game.”
The Kings (15-13) managed to pick up three runs in the top of the fourth and closed the gap to within 9-4 but left the bases loaded. The Lions added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.
Will Watkins pitched a complete game for the Lions, allowing only four hits.
“This is the winningest team we’ve had in our 10 years, and we’ll celebrate and cherish them, take it in stride and move forward,” Bergen said.
The Lions will play the runner up from District 2A-9, while the Kings face the winner of the same district in regional play on Wednesday.
