Biggersville survives, gets shot at redemption

Biggersville survived poor free throw and 3-point shooting late in the game to defeat West Lincoln, 61-55, in the 1A boys semifinal.

Biggersville (27-7), No. 3 in 1A, allowed fourth-ranked West Lincoln (31-4) to keep the game close when it made only 4-of-17 free throw attempts (23.5 percent). Despite 12 of those missed free throws coming in the second half, seniors Daniel Simmons and Jaylon Gaines provided enough steady play in the fourth quarter to hold off the Bears.

Simmons finished with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Gaines added 19 points.

The victory sets up a rematch of last year’s 1A championship against reigning 1A champion Coldwater on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

“Coldwater beat us on the boards last time we played them,” said Biggersville coach Cliff Little. “They are a really good team, really athletic. We’ll have to bring our A-plus game in order to have an opportunity at the end.”
