Binghamton, Vestal football teams ready for Friday matchup

By

Binghamton returns home after back-to-back away games to take on Vestal in a football game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Binghamton Alumni Stadium.

Each brings a 2-1 record into the contest, and each features a running back capable of making big things happen when given but the tiniest crack of space.

The Golden Bears’ Zach Cook has gone for 336 yards this season despite a quiet game last week against Union-Endicott — which threw the brakes on Vestal’s offense, permitting six points after the Bears had scored at a 38-per-game clip the first two weekends.

The Patriots go-to guy is Amman Weaver, whose 457 rushing yards have come on an 8.6-per-carry average.

Binghamton has beaten Vestal each of the last two seasons, following a 20-14 Golden Bears win in 2010.

Elsewhere Friday …

Chenango Forks (2-1) at Lansing (2-1): The first of back-to-back road games has Forks taking on a Lansing squad coming off a 54-20 rout of Trumansburg, in which Tyler Winslow rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns. …

Windsor (1-2) at Norwich (2-1): Will the real Purple Tornado please step forward? After getting smacked at Vestal, Norwich has rolled over Oneonta and slipped past Owego — and this one marks a third consecutive home game. Michael Oralls has averaged 160 rushing yards per game for the Tornado. Windsor’s Josh Cady has passed for 379 yards. …

Harpursville (3-0) at Sidney (2-1): One of the more enticing matchups of the week pits the state’s ninth-ranked Class D team, which has allowed an average of 12 points per game, against a Sidney squad that has averaged 39.3. The Hornets’ Devon Dean has accounted for 525 yards of offense. …

Greene (2-1) at Dryden (2-1): Here are a couple teams smarting from last weekend — Greene off a 25-0 loss at Newark Valley and Dryden off a 49-12 loss at Forks. A season ago, Greene was a 34-0 winner. …

Bainbridge-Guilford (0-3) at Unatego (2-1): The Spartans have logged impressive wins over Sidney and Walton since absorbing a season-opening lickin’ from Forks. Dylan Moffitt heads B-G rushers with 286 yards. …

Deposit/Hancock (2-1) at Unadilla Valley (0-3): Matt Mills has passed for 251 yards and rushed for 219, and teammate Dane Edwards has added 192 on the ground for Deposit/Hancock. …

Candor (1-2) at Oxford (0-3): The Blackhawks have been limited to a 26-point total in a demanding three-game stretch in which they have opposed Dryden, Walton and Sidney.

Saturday

Corning (1-2) at Susquehanna Valley (2-1): The Sabers have gotten a hair over 200 rushing yards per game from Marquis Jackson, and their 97 points rank second among Section 4’s Class B teams. …

Maine-Endwell (3-0) vs. Johnson City (1-2) at Binghamton Alumni Stadium: Top-ranked M-E plays the third of its first four games away from Spartan Stadium and seeks to extend the program’s win streak to 29 games. JC’s first three opponents have a combined 7-2 record. …

Trumansburg (0-3) at Chenango Valley (1-2): The Warriors’ second consecutive home game comes against an opponent that has surrendered a Section 4 Class C high 122 points. …

Newark Valley (3-0) at Thomas A. Edison (1-2): The Cardinals, ranked 20th in Class C, have permitted a combined 14 points the past two weekends. …

Walton (2-1) at Delhi (1-2): Coming off a loss to Unatego, the Warriors can ill-afford a loss that would drop them to an 0-2 record in Division V. Next up for Delhi is a trip to Unatego. …

Tioga (3-0) vs. Seton CC (1-2), 7 p.m. at Binghamton Alumni Stadium: The second-ranked guests favor the ground game, while Saints quarterback Robert Olsen has passed for 797 yards and six touchdowns. Tioga’s two on-field opponents (Week 1 brought a forfeit win) have teamed for six points. …

Ithaca (0-3) at Union-Endicott (1-2), 7 p.m.: Sammy Davis’ rushing totals have increased with each game, and he now shows 494 on a 6.5-per-carry average for the Tigers. Of Joey Orlando’s 586 passing yards, 285 have gone to C.J. Krowiak.

Whitney Point (1-2) vs. Waverly (2-1), 7 p.m. at Athens: The alternate venue will be in use as Waverly’s War Memorial Stadium has been closed for the season because of safety concerns. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 20-point loss at Chenango Valley.
