John Wolford's high school football career ended Friday, but it certainly wasn't for a lack of effort. The Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville, Fla.) senior quarterback set several state passing records but his team lost its 5A playoff game, 74-73, to Clay (Green Cove Springs).
Wolford threw for 533 yards and eight touchdowns and ran for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Along the way, he set state career records for passing yards (10,621), total offense (13,403 yards), and touchdowns (162 with 126 passing and 36 passing). The game also set state records for most points and most points by a losing team.
"I think he has a lot of different attributes," Bishop Kenny coach Mark Thorson said. "He controls the field like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. He sees the field well.
He's a great competitor like the quarterbacks who will their team to win."
Every time Clay scored, Wolford was able to respond until Clay quarterback Wes Weeks scored the final touchdown on a 10-yard run with 10 seconds left.

"We were not able to stop Clay on the defensive side of the ball," Thorson said. "It ended up being a shootout. It ended up being an answer type of game. John continued to answer and make big plays for us. He's been a great player for four years here."
Despite his big numbers, Wolford's only offers so far are from East Carolina and Wake Forest because Wolford is only 6-1.
"I'm biased," Thorson said. "I would tell everybody else who's not looking at him that they're making a mistake."
